Space Marines 750?! This is new!
Author: Privaron :: Posted: Thu Jul 03, 2008 3:22 pm
Hey guys, well, I made this list in literally 23 seconds, off the top of my head. It's meant to revolve around a 12" circle of morale. The scouts are there for fire support kinda, and the dreadnought is there for the rare rending blow. =)

Space Marines: 750

HQ:
Epistolary 130
Storm of the Emperor's Wrath
Fear of Darkness
Command Squad: 100
4 Marines, 1 Sergeant
Standard Bearer

Elites:
Dreadnought 105

Troops:
2x9 Space Marines 320
2 Sergeants
2 Melta Guns

4 Scouts 90
1 Sergeant
1 Missle Launcer
3 Sniper Rifles

Enjoy the lulz.

Space Marine configurations (4th ed., still)
Author: Wander :: Posted: Thu Jul 03, 2008 6:25 am
Hey all,

I'm considering getting back into the tabletop side of game after taking a few years off to develop the modeling and painting side. I'm going to play a few 1,000 point games over the next few weeks as part of a local hobby shops' "5th edition" kickoff featuring a combat marathon leading to an all-night release party.

I want to kind of make a good showing for myself, and I know I can do that, as I'm playing Space Marines (Ultramarines, natch), so I'm generally going to set my 1,000 points each day based around this core (some of the choices are compulsory, as I very firmly play WYSIWYG):

1 Commander (Master) with a Bolter and Power Fist, attached to a 10-man Tactical Squad (No Drop Pod) with Heavy Bolter and Plasmagun.

5-man Scout Squad, no upgrades.

1 Venerable Dreadnought with an Assault Cannon and Power Fist/Storm Bolter, kitted with Extra Armor and Smoke Launchers. Optionally deployed via Drop Pod, otherwise the thirty points are spent on a Iron Halo for the Master.

1 Dreadnought with Twin-linked Lascannons and Missile Launcher.

1 Land Speeder Typhoon (Heavy Bolter/Assault Cannon), Deep Striking if possible.

This leaves enough points to select one of the following options:

The Close Combat Option - 1 Reclusiarch Chaplain with a Plasma Pistol attached to a 5-man Veteran Squad with Bolt Pistols and CCWs, one Power Weapon and a Plasma Pistol on the Terminator-Honors equipped Vet. Sgt., all mounted in a Razorback with Heavy Bolter, Extra Armor and Smoke Launchers. Taking this option eliminates the Venerable Drop Pod.

OR

The Heavy Weapons Option - 1 Techmarine with Auspex and Bolt Pistol attached to a 5-man Devastator Squad, mounted in a Razorback with Heavy Bolter

OR

The "Tactical" Option - 5-man Bike Squadron with 2 Meltaguns plus Attack Bike with 1 Multi-melta.

The question in my mind is how to configure the Devastator Squad. I can see the value in a 4x Heavy Bolter configuration in general - fifteen Heavy Bolter shots per turn will make mincemeat of almost any infantry squad and will even cause worry for light vehicles and some monstrous creatures, but I worry that going that route will put too much pressure on my artillery Dreadnought and Assault cannons for handling anything with Armor above 12 or Toughness above 6.

My second thought is to configure the squad as a 3x Missile Launcher, 1x Plasma Cannon squad. Having a Techmarine, as I recall, allows me to reroll a "1" rolled for the Plasma Cannon, which would help with the Gets Hot! special rule. This squad would probable score slightly fewer kills against opposing infantry, but would be a much scarier prospect for enemy vehicles and large targets.

The last option is 2x Lascannon, 2x Missile Launcher, and abandon any hope of anti-infantry, leaving that job to my Tactical Squad; however, that pretty well eliminates any resilient long-range anti-infantry ability of the army, placing my hopes firmly on a single squad, some Scouts and a Land Speeder.

I'm firm on the Veteran squad - I feel they're a pretty bad choice in general, but I haven't an Assault Squad and I feel that in 1,000 points, a vehicle-mounted Veteran Squad can really shine if they use cover well. Plus, two Plasma Pistols, two Power Weapons, and 21 attacks on the charge (12 at S5 I5, 4 at S5 I5 Ignore Armor and 5 at S4 I5 Ignore Armor), as well as re-rolling failed to-hits, is fairly formidable, particularly when backed up by a Heavy Bolter.

The Bike Squad as well, I'm happy with. I feel the strength of Bikes in general is the mobility, and I rarely see myself forgoing their movement; since Meltaguns are strictly superior to Plasmaguns when moving (same range, +1 STR, better AP, no Gets Hot!, better vs. Vehicles), I don't see any reason to use a Plasmagun in my Bike Squads. And yes, I know Bikes are "Fast Attack", but it's clear to me they're not meant to be Assault troops but rather highly mobile ranged infantry - Twin-linked ranged weaponry, 12" Move, no CCW and the option to equip high-powered ranged weaponry? They're a Tactical Squad on steroids.

Thoughts? Suggestions?
