Just posting because I've started to notice an extra significant issue with 40k. Maybe it's just me, in which case there's obviously no real problem, but does anybody else feel like each no codex is really more and more over the top? I used to think it was a problem in 3E. By 4E I accepted it as smart business and a lot of people over-reacting. But more and more I find myself disenchanted by Games Workshop's unabashed alterations to units/rules with each new codex's arrival; rapidly changing units (like Zoanthropes getting way better, cheaper, more numerous, and moving to Elites), rapidly generating units (like the Blood Angels book; I think they have more new units then they have repeats of units from their old book) and frankly their disregard for maintaining even casual regard for game balances. I aimed for tourney play briefly and was disgusted by everything that happens with those lists, but it's really spilled into casual play too.

Has anyone else had issues like this? Have you found solutions? Right now I've been playing more and more War Machine just because I can actually enjoy the game. I certainly don't want to get rid of all my 40k stuff (especially after getting 2 people started on it) but I have trouble having fun during most games now..

I've noticed the codices and units within getting stronger and more versatile. The new units are passing over basic rules in the main rule book making playing such armies difficult.
My son was reading the new BA book and told me it is way broken. Not to the common player whose intentions are to play a balanced force. But to the rules lawyers and list makers who sit and try to make those lethal lists that are nigh on unstoppable.
I've already heard of a couple of nasty combinations that are really over the top. I've decided that I'm here to have fun, not migraines. If an opponent keeps playing these over the top lists, I'll simply play someone else.
While the change is good, it really shouldn't be over the top. Awhile back someone stated we would be seeing red, blue, yellow, etc BA and I believe it. Hooray for GW they are making more money. Boohoo for the tourney players that have to face the newer codices.
BTW-I also dislike the use of named characters in the C:SM for different chapters. Such as Khan who should only be in White Scars or Kantor only in the Crimson Fists.

My $.02

I've read through the BA codex and seen several games played with 'Non-competitive' BA lists.

Just a simple skim through the BA codex left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm playing vanilla marines and they're DSing Landraiders. Not only that, they're Psychic powers and troop choices are horridly good.

They're tourney legal Angry marines.

Not to mention that the BA fluff in the codex is laughable. The BAs allied with necrons? WTF?

I have to admit, I havent had a game in months and I guess things have been changing while I have been away.

Its one thing to change units around, that just seems like they are testing to see what happens when something is a certain way, although even that seems a little random or like someones big experiment. Its another thing to go over the top with the fluff. While I am all for better BA, what little I have seen here makes me wonder who the hell is writing this stuff. Space marines allied with necrons?! Are they joking! Necrons are only even half sentient things most of the time. I am wondering if they have outsourced their writing to people who have almost no idea about the existing fluff.

I like how Dan Abnett described chaptermasters as stern and thoughtful leaders.

Then has them happily agreeing to mindlessly lending members of their chapter to the Ultra's.

Ref. Spacemarine reaction to Tau incursions.

Also I haven't taken the time to read the BA 'dex, but I will say that were I to find fluff forcing BA and 'crons into an alliance I would be disenchanted by GW. So to speak.

They have Librarian Dreadnaughts who can fly, Mephiston is a S6(10) T6 5W "Librarian" (Read: Flying carnifex), new vehicles and weapons (I thought marines didn't like that sort of thing)....the whole codex is a mess.

They are spacemarines who've finally recognized the brilliance of ork thinking:
If it's killy, shooty, or has lotsa dakka USE IT.
Hence the magna grapple.
Though Mephiston isn't unstoppable. He has no invlunerable and he counts as a unit. Not an independent character.
My sternguard have yet another irritation to remove. :-D

Also I've found that mishap can even effect the mighty landraider, with rather unwholesome results.

But their mini-Thunderhawk is ridiculous.

Pretty sure mephiston is an IC...don't have the book on me, but willing to bet on it....as for easy to kill; he's functionally immune to Instadeath, and can, realistically, kill 4-5 models a turn, or 1-2 good MCs a turn. Thats just plain ridiculous.

The BA Wave Serpent doesn't bother me SOOOOO much, even if it can carry a 12 man unit AND a dreadnought at the same time; at least it costs points. Nor do I worry about their DSing Land Raiders; seems like wasted print, to me.

*gets out crystal ball and tarrot cards*

I forsee an Errata in the near future.....

Either way, he is a flying MC with 5 wounds and the ability to hide in a transport; he should have no problem engaging.

Yes... He does eat things in close combat... But my good friend Telion and his local club buddy the Vindicare are willing to sort out Mephistons nasty head-pains.

HOLD

THE FRIKKIN

HORSES.

.. BAs allied with -Necron-?

Please elaborate?

Because I can see this coming back in ten years and giving me PTS issues..

On the original note, I saw it as good business like you Stryder, but I think they saw it too and they've run with it - to the pain of the dedicated player. I stopped playing against strangers a few years ago, and haven't regretted it. I found too many power players, and like someone said, I'm there to have fun, not a migrain.

*nods* my sentiments exactly. I haven't played W40K in months, and havent missed it all that much. Thinking about dusting off my Asrai though....

Really, I think as long as I keep it casual, I'll be able to maintain interest. The tourney scene is total shite though; forget that!

@McFlufferson: No BS. Go pick up the new BA codex and look through the "fluff" section. It's in there.

TBH Soul I don't think I'll be pulling out the Darkies till 8th edition comes out. It'll give me the extra time to finish the two units I have left. Black Guard and Spear Elves. Otherwise I just have trouble justifying playing the game. I'm going to stick with the Cygnus for now! Go Machine!

I've heard great things about 8th. Especially when it comes to my stunties!

if it's good for dwarves, then maybe magic got hammered back a bit (wouldn't surprise me, since every good army is extremely awesome at magic right now)....that would be extra hot!

Truth told, from the rumours I'm a little less then enamoured with the new rules; that said, maybe when I see 'em all together things will be better...
